Why we're building it

Reading an ingredient label shouldn't feel like doing homework in a fluorescent aisle.

Casein. Carmine. Shellac. L-cysteine. The names that hide animal products are designed to be ignored. ScanVegan reads them for you — every name, every language — and translates the answer into a single word.

01 — Barcode

The fastest answer in the aisle.

Open Food Facts indexes more than three million products. Scan a barcode and most known SKUs are recognized before you've finished lifting the box.

  • Returns the source: brand declaration, batch, or community-verified
  • Surfaces "may contain" and shared-line warnings
  • Falls back to label OCR when the barcode is unknown

02 — Label OCR

Read any label, in any language.

Snap the back of the package. The model parses ingredients in more than thirty languages, then checks each one against a continuously-maintained dictionary.

  • Catches additives by E-number, INCI code, or local name
  • Translates the ingredient list into your language
  • Highlights anything ambiguous, not just confirmed positives

03 — Dish

Catch what menus don't mention.

Pad thai with fish sauce. Saag with ghee. Risotto finished with parmesan. Point the camera at the plate and the model flags the usual suspects before you take a bite.

  • Trained on cuisines from 40+ countries
  • Flags hidden animal ingredients common to the dish
  • Suggests questions to ask the kitchen, in their language
